Foreign languages

We teach English from Grade 1 and German from Grade 7, from Grade 4 in groups by level.

    How teaching is organised

English12 in Grades 1–3, 3 in Grades 4–8whole classes in Grades 1–3, from Grade 4 groups of up to 15
    German72groups of up to 15

In Grades 1–3 we teach through play, songs and movement, so lessons are taught to whole classes.

    Groups by level

From Grade 4 we divide classes into groups by language level. Groups are assigned in September, based on a short diagnostic test.

We review the groups at the start of each year and, when needed, after the first semester. A student who has made progress or needs a calmer pace changes group at the request of the teacher or a parent.

What we teach beyond the textbook

Real-life texts and recordings. From Grade 6 students also work with short texts, recordings and instructions made for native speakers.

Speaking comes first. In ongoing assessment, speaking counts at least as much as written work. Speaking is the most useful skill in practice, yet textbooks practise it the least.

Pen pals. Grades 7 and 8 exchange messages with students from a partner school. The exchange ends with a joint project and presentation.

    Frequently asked questions

Which language does an eighth-grader take the exam in?

In one foreign language that they learn at school as a compulsory subject. Here it can be English or German. Most students choose English, which they have learned since Grade 1.

The parent submits the declaration in September, at the start of Grade 8. A change can be made no later than three months before the exam.

Can my child change language group?

Yes. We review the groups at the start of the year and after the first semester. A request for a change can be made by a parent or the language teacher.

Does the school prepare students for external language exams?

In lessons we follow the core curriculum. Teachers support students interested in a certificate at the conversation club and advise them on how to prepare on their own.

What if my child comes from another school with a different language?

Please contact the school office before enrolling. We will decide whether the student joins the group or needs catch-up classes in the first semester.
