Grades 1–3

In Grades 1–3 children learn with one teacher, at a calm pace and in their own classroom.

What a day looks like in the younger classes

Most lessons are taught by the form teacher. English, PE and music are taught by subject teachers.

The teacher sets the rhythm of work during the day, adapting it to the topic and the group. Breaks follow the bells, together with the whole school.

Each class has its own classroom with a circle-time corner, a class library and space to display work.

    What we teach

Early years education is integrated, which means we do not divide it into separate subjects. It covers Polish, maths, science, social studies, art, technology, music, IT and PE.

We teach English from Grade 1, two hours a week. In Grades 1–3 lessons are taught to whole classes.

    Descriptive assessment

In Grades 1–3 we use descriptive assessment instead of grades. Parents and children find out what the student can already do, what they are working on and what is worth practising.

In everyday work teachers use the same symbols and comments in all classes. The form teacher gives parents a list of them in September.

    The first year at school

    1. September – settling in

In the first week lessons are shorter. Children get to know the building, the rules and each other, and learn the way to the cloakroom, canteen and after-school club.

    2. October – first-grader induction ceremony

A ceremony with parents. The first-graders perform in front of the school for the first time.

    3. All year round – no written homework

In grades 1–3 we do not set written or practical homework. The teacher may only suggest exercises to improve hand skills. At home, it is enough for your child to read and talk about what happened at school.

    4. End of term and year – descriptive assessment

After the first term, parents receive written information about progress. The end-of-year assessment describes the child's achievements and behaviour.

    Support

At the start of Grade 1, the speech therapist carries out speech screening. We pass the results on to parents and offer speech therapy to children who need it.

We also run remedial and compensatory classes, corrective gymnastics and classes developing emotional and social skills. In classes with children who have a statement of special educational needs, there is a co-teaching support teacher.
