Student council

    The Student Council is made up of all the students in the school – including you.

    The Student Council is more than its board

    The Student Council board is a few people elected by students. It represents students to the school management and helps organise what students themselves come up with.

    You don't have to be on the board to put forward an idea. Just bring it to a meeting or drop a note in the box by the Student Council room.

    Elections

    We elect the board every year, at the end of September or beginning of October. Any student in Grades 4–8 can stand. You don't need a particular average or behaviour grade.

    All students in Grades 4–8 vote, by secret ballot, in a specially prepared room. We announce the exact election dates in September in the news section and on the Student Council noticeboard.

    What the Student Council decides

    Under the Student Council rules, the council board has a real say in these matters, either deciding or giving its opinion:

    • theme days – up to six a year, submitted to the school management two weeks in advance;
    • internal competitions – topic, rules and prizes;
    • decorating the corridors and display cases on the ground floor;
    • student budget – money raised by the Student Council and granted by the Parents' Council;
    • music during long breaks – choice and schedule;
    • opinions on test dates during the week and on changes to rules that affect students.

    The board can also submit proposals to the school management on any school matter. The board chooses the council's supervising teacher in agreement with the head teacher.

    How the board works

    The board meets every two weeks, on Thursdays after lessons, in the Student Council room. Meetings are open – anyone with an issue can come.

    The board has a chair, two deputies, a treasurer and a secretary, plus the heads of three sections: organisation, media and volunteering. We don't give names on the website because that is students' personal data. The board's members are listed on the noticeboard by the Student Council room.

    How to submit an idea

    Every idea gets a reply – even one that can't be carried out. In that case the board explains why.

    1. Write down your idea

      In a few sentences write what you want to do, who it's for and what you need for it.

    2. Hand it to the Student Council

      Drop the note in the Student Council box or bring it to the board's Thursday meeting.

    3. Wait for a reply

      The board discusses submissions at its next meeting and replies within two weeks.

    4. Make it happen with the board

      If the idea needs the school management's approval or money, the board will help you prepare a proposal.

    I thought the Student Council only organised discos. It turned out we can really change things, like the music during breaks and how the corridor looks.
