Psychological and educational support

    In this section4 pages

    Psychological and educational support at school is free of charge, voluntary and needs no referral.

    Who can come to us

    Support can be requested by a parent, a teacher or the student themselves. No referral or counselling centre opinion is needed. For a child to take part in regular sessions, we ask for the parent's consent.

    Support can be used once, for a specific issue, or regularly, over a longer period.

    When it's worth getting in touch

    There is no need to wait until a situation becomes serious. The most common reasons for coming to us are:

    • learning difficulties that persist despite work at home;
    • problems in relationships with peers, feeling rejected, conflicts;
    • severe stress before tests and the exam;
    • a change in the family situation, such as moving house, parents separating or illness in the family;
    • withdrawal, sadness or a change in behaviour that is hard to talk about;
    • suspected specific difficulties such as dyslexia or dyscalculia;
    • uncertainty about choosing a secondary school.

    How a referral works

    1. Request

      A conversation with the form teacher, a message via the e-register or a direct visit to the specialist during their working hours.

    2. Assessment

      A conversation with the student and parent, observation in lessons and, if needed, a conversation with the student's teachers.

    3. Agreeing the form of support

      Together with the parent we decide what will help the child most and how often.

    4. Starting support

      The parent gives written consent for the child to take part in the sessions. We inform them of the dates and the person running them.

    5. Review

      Twice a year we assess whether the support is helping and decide whether to continue or change it.

    Confidentiality

    Conversations with a specialist are confidential. We pass on to parents what is needed to help the child, after talking with the student. We tell teachers only as much as they need to support the student in lessons.

    The exception is a threat to the health or life of the student or another person. Then we are obliged to act and inform the parents and, if necessary, the relevant institutions. When the threat concerns the family, we follow the child protection standards and the Blue Card procedure. The specialist says this at the start of the conversation.

    Students with a statement or assessment

    For a student with a statement of special educational needs, teachers and specialists prepare an individual educational and therapeutic programme. The parent takes part in preparing it and receives a copy.

    We introduce the adjustments from the counselling centre's opinion as soon as the opinion is delivered to the school office. No separate application is needed.

    Would you like to talk about your child? The school counsellor sees people every day, no appointment needed.
