    Screening

At the start of the school year we screen the speech of all children in the pre-school classes and students in first grade. The screening takes a few minutes, is done at school and needs no preparation.

Parents receive written information about the result, even when everything is fine. If the screening shows a need for therapy, the speech therapist contacts the parent and suggests sessions.

    Speech therapy

Sessions take place once or twice a week, individually or in small groups. They last 30–45 minutes and are built into the child's daily schedule.

In the sessions the speech therapist corrects the pronunciation of sounds and works on the speech organs' agility and fluency. They also work on vocabulary and phonemic hearing, that is telling sounds apart.

Taking part in therapy requires written consent from the parent.

    Consultations for parents

A parent can arrange a consultation regardless of the screening result, including about a child in the older grades. A consultation doesn't commit you to anything.

Parents most often come because they are worried about the pronunciation of particular sounds or about stuttering. Other common reasons are difficulties with reading and writing and delayed speech development.

When the counselling centre is needed

Some difficulties need assessment outside school, for example a hearing test, neuro-speech therapy or an ENT consultation.

In that case the speech therapist prepares information for the psychological and educational counselling centre and helps plan the next steps. Therapy at school can continue at the same time.
