“Loud and Clear” Reading Aloud Competition for Grades 1–3

Published: 19 February 2026 Categories: Competitions, Younger classes

Students in Grades 1–3 will read aloud a passage from a book of their choice. Class heats will take place at the end of February, and the final in March in the school library.

Each participant chooses a passage from a favourite book and reads it for about two minutes. The text can come from a set book or from any other book.

Class heats take place at the end of February in the school library. Two students from each class go through to the final.

The jury assesses fluency, diction, pace and understanding of the text. We do not assess acting, so there is no need to learn the text by heart.

    Parents' questions

Does the passage have to come from a set book?

No. It can be any children's book, including one brought from home. We only ask that the passage is suitable for the listeners' age.

    How long is the reading?

About two minutes. The form teacher will help choose a passage of the right length.

Who is on the jury for the final?

The teacher librarian, early-years teachers and a representative of the Parents' Council.
